STEEL RIGG
A solastic destination. Walkers, climbers and cyclists gather to gain respite and protection from the elements. They recover from the days activities before preparing for the day ahead. Steel Rigg offers the chance to stop within, yet continue to discover the harsh yet beautiful landscape that are the Pennines.
Steel Rigg is located halfway between Newcastle and Carlisle, along the historic Hadrian’s Wall in remote Northumberland. the brief asked for new hostel and visitor centre accomodation to replace existing run down facilities.
Mapping sole pathways across the open landscape, adventurers seek respite at converging points along the route.
The scheme responded directly to the vernacular.
Utilising the high and low points of the terrain enabled accomadation that acted as a beacon to weary travellers, and protected pods that allowed occupants a sense of shelter.
Pre fabricated pod structures are lowered onto pre prepared foundations on site.
The materials chosen reflect those of the rural context.
